The Problems with Most Sump Pumps

The two issues with most sump pumps are the quality of the pumps themselves, as well as the experience and capabilities of the installer.

Sump pump installation

Quality

Sump pumps purchased from a hardware store or online retailers are often little more than an electrical pump with a float switch and nothing else. Their ability to remove water is often extremely limited, incapable of handling heavier precipitation. Key features you should look for in a sump pump (that are often missing from hardware store varieties) include:

  • Alarm that sounds when pump loses power or problems are detected
  • Additional float switch as failsafe
  • Warranty for more than one year
  • Output terminals to connect to home security system
  • Optionally, but preferably, a battery backup

Installation

The second issue facing most homeowners’ sump pumps is the installation. It’s extremely important for someone with professional experience in waterproofing to decide on the placement of the pump to ensure the water is collected by the pump at a low point.  It’s also crucial that the pump is wired correctly to prevent potential electrical issues.  The pump’s output piping needs to be properly placed as well to avoid causing additional water problems elsewhere.

Repair of old sump pump failure

Why You Need a Backup Sump Pump System

If the power goes out, your main AC pump will not run and your basement will flood.

The Pro Series backup system will provide a secondary pumping source. It will pump intermittently for days. For extra long run time, it can handle up to 3 batteries for extended pumping time.

If your main pump fails due to a mechanical problem, or if the pump is clogged with debris, the basement will flood.

The Pro Series system will provide a secondary pump and keep your basement dry.

If the float switch on your main pump gets stuck or fails, your basement will flood.

The Pro Series backup system will activate, pump the water out and sound an alarm indicating that the main pump did not activate.

If the discharge pipe in your main pump is clogged or frozen, or if the sewer is full, your basement will flood.

The Pro Series system will provide a secondary discharge line when you plumb it directly outside. The water will have somewhere to go other than your basement.
